Description:

3,3',5,5'-Tetramethyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-2,2'-diol is an organic compound that has been used as a hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) catalyst. It is a molecule with two phenol groups and two hydroxyl groups that are attached to the same carbon atom. The phenolic hydroxyls of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-2,2'-diol can catalyze the oxidation of H2O2 to produce O- and HO- radicals. The generation of HO- radicals from 3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-2,2'-diol by H+ is then catalyzed by a persulfate or other oxidant. This process is called "persulfate mediated peroxidation".
