Product Information
- Hexadecanoic acid, 16-bromo-, methyl ester
Methyl 16-bromohexadecanoate is a long-chain, unsymmetrical, nucleophilic analog of methyl hexadecanoate. It is synthesized from the corresponding sulfoxide, which is obtained by treating the fatty acid with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a catalytic amount of sodium hydroxide and an analytical grade base such as triethylamine. This compound can be used for radiolabeling fatty acids or for use as a standard in analytical high performance liquid chromatography. Methyl 16-bromohexadecanoate is also used to produce sulfoxides by treatment with sulfur dioxide in the presence of an acid catalyst. The sulfoxides are subsequently reacted with alcohols or amines to produce esters or amides.
