8-Iodo-1-tetralone is a reactive molecule that can react with nucleophiles by transferring the iodine moiety to form a new carbon-carbon bond. It has been shown to be specific for nucleophilic substitution reactions, and is an effective catalyst for desymmetrization of cyclic ketones. 8-Iodo-1-tetralone has been used in the synthesis of peptides containing sequences for which no other synthetic method was available. This compound also has the ability to catalyze chemoenzymatic reactions, such as the synthesis of β-lactams and α,β unsaturated carboxylic acids. 8-Iodo-1-tetralone has been shown to be homogeneous as it does not require any solvent or cofactor to catalyze reactions.
