4,6-Dioxoheptanoic acid is a metabolic intermediate that is involved in the production of tyrosine. It is also a biochemical marker for tyrosinemia, which is an inherited disorder that causes the body to produce too much of this intermediate. The diagnosis of this condition can be made through blood sampling and measuring the level of 4,6-Dioxoheptanoic acid in the blood. A high level of 4,6-Dioxoheptanoic acid can be found in patients with tyrosinemia when their blood cells are exposed to colloidal gold or succinylacetone. Treatment for this disease includes a diet low in protein and phenylalanine; supplementation with niacinamide and pyridoxine; and dietary restriction of tyrosine and phenylalanine.
