1-N-Butylbenzene-1,2-diamine is a fluorescent probe that can be used to measure the redox potential of glutathione. The probe is selectively excited by light with wavelengths greater than 300 nm and emits light in the visible range. The fluorescence intensity of 1-N-butylbenzene-1,2-diamine is proportional to the concentration of glutathione, and can be measured using spectrophotometry or fluorometry. Fluorescent probes are often used in biological assays because they are non-toxic and specific to their target molecule.
1-N-Butylbenzene-1,2-diamine has been shown to bind to glutathione with high affinity and specificity. This compound binds covalently via its amine moiety to the sulfhydryl group (-SH) of GSH and forms an adduct that has increased fluorescence intensity and dichroic ratio
