6-(4-Carboxyphenyl)nicotinic acid is a luminescent probe that has been shown to be selective for lanthanide ions in single-crystal x-ray diffraction. 6-(4-Carboxyphenyl)nicotinic acid is also used as an adsorption indicator, with the isotherm of the compound being linear up to 10 molal. This compound has been found to be selective for lanthanides at low temperatures and efficiencies up to 80%.
