3-Chlorophthalonitrile is a chiral, fluorine containing compound that has been used as a chemosensor. It has two isomers, 1-chloro-2-aminoethane and 2-chloro-1,3-propanediamine. The two isomers are distinguished by the way they respond to light, with the 1-chloro form being more sensitive to ultraviolet light than the 2-chloro form. 3-Chlorophthalonitrile has also been studied for its ability to expand when heated and shrink when cooled. This property makes it an excellent candidate for use in thermometers or other temperature sensing devices.
