6,13-Diphenylpentacene is a quinone that does not have a known biological function. The compound has been synthesized by the reaction of phenylmagnesium bromide and pentacene. X-ray structures of 6,13-diphenylpentacene show that it has two phenyl groups bonded to the carbons at positions 1 and 13. The red shift in the x-ray absorption spectrum suggests an electron spin resonance (ESR) signal. ESR spectroscopy showed the presence of unpaired electrons in this molecule with energies exceeding 2 eV. Molecular modeling simulations suggest that 6,13-diphenylpentacene may be able to act as an electron donor, which could lead to its use in organic solar cells or as a photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy.
