This interaction inhibits the bacterial cell wall by inhibiting the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids. 5-Cyano-2-methyl-6-oxonicotinic acid also has an antimicrobial effect on Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria, including methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
