N-(4-(2-Methyl-1H-imidazol-4-yl)-2-thiazolyl)-N'-pentylguanidine (MTG) is a cholinergic drug that is used as an antiulcer agent. It has been shown to have a direct effect on the stomach and duodenum, inhibiting gastric and duodenal ulcers. The affinity of MTG for muscarinic receptors in the stomach is much higher than its affinity for muscarinic receptors in the brain. MTG also blocks histamine H2 receptors, which are important for the production of acid in the stomach. This drug has minimal inhibitory concentrations in the range of 10 to 50 μg/mL against most strains of Helicobacter pylori, and it is not effective against other bacteria such as Enterococcus faecalis or Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
