5-Hydroxynicotinamide is a plant-derived compound that has been shown to have antiplasmodial and antimalarial activities. It has been demonstrated to be an inhibitor of tumor cells, in particular leishmania and plasmodium. The leaves of the plant from which 5-hydroxynicotinamide is derived are used as a traditional medicine for the treatment of fever, malaria, and other diseases. The structure of 5-hydroxynicotinamide was determined by spectroscopic data and chemical analysis. Hypoxic tumor cells were found to be more susceptible than normoxic tumor cells to the antitumor activity of 5-hydroxynicotinamide. A potential synergistic effect between 5-hydroxynicotinamide and nicotinamide was also observed; both compounds were found to inhibit proliferation in hypoxic tumor cells.
