2-Amino-N-phenylpropanamide is a stereoselective analytical method for the determination of gram-negative pathogens. 2-Amino-N-phenylpropanamide is a substrate for the enzyme aminopeptidase, which hydrolyzes it to amino acids and phenylalanine. This reaction can be monitored by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The headspace technique has been used to detect the volatile compounds released by bacteria as they are being grown in culture media. The stereoselective analytical method has been used to differentiate between strains of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and Cepacia complex that produce different types of aminopeptidases.
