Filipin III is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon isolated from coal tar. It is an immunosuppressant that has been shown to inhibit the production of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-2 (IL-2). Filipin III also has anti-inflammatory effects, which have been demonstrated in mice with bowel disease by inhibiting the production of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and TNF-α. Filipin III also inhibits toll-like receptor signaling, which may be due to its ability to inhibit NFκB activation. Filipin III binds to DNA and induces a conformational change in the DNA sequence, which prevents transcription and replication.
