BAPTA, Tetrasodium Salt is a chemical compound that binds to the retinoic acid receptor (RAR) and estrogen receptor (ER). It has been shown to inhibit chronic pain in animal models. BAPTA, Tetrasodium Salt is also used as a fluorescent probe for cell-membrane labeling and has been successfully used in the study of leukemia cells. BAPTA, Tetrasodium Salt can be used for the treatment of humans with chronic pain, but it also has some side effects such as nausea and vomiting. This drug is also used to treat phenothiazine-induced Parkinsonism. BAPTA, Tetrasodium Salt is an ionophore that binds to subunits of the plasma membrane, which may be due to its high affinity for phospholipid membranes. The technique of using Xenopus oocytes to test the biological effect of drugs on animals is called whole-cell patch clamp electrophysiology.
