N-Tetracosenoyl-(cis-15)-sulfatide is an analytical reagent that is used in the detection of sulfatides. The compound reacts with sulfatides to produce a spectrometric product. The hydrogen bond between the hydroxyl group on the N-tetracosenoyl-(cis-15)-sulfatide and the hydroxyl group on the sulfate ester group of sulfatides is responsible for this reaction. It has been used in the detection of fatty acids, neutral lipids, and acyl chains in tissue extracts.
N-Tetracosenoyl-(cis-15)-sulfatide is also used as a research tool to study autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and psoriasis. Miglustat, a drug that inhibits sphingomyelin synthase, can inhibit the synthesis of N-tetracosenoyl-(cis-15
