It is used as an electrolyte in lithium batteries and as a reagent for the synthesis of organometallic compounds such as titanium tetrafluoride. This compound has shown to have enzyme activities in photosynthetic systems, which may be due to its ability to bind to metal hydroxides and form hydrogen bonding interactions with intramolecular hydrogen.
