7,8-Dihydro-5H-pyrano[4,3-b]pyridin-3-amine is a prodrug that is converted to its active form pyrido[4,3-b]pyridin-3(2H)-one in vivo. It has significant homology with sequences of infectious agents and it has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria in vitro. 7,8-Dihydro-5H-pyrano[4,3-b]pyridin-3-amine inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to their ribosomal RNA at the peptide bond between amino acids 30 and 50 and preventing protein synthesis.
