Zinquin is a small molecule that inhibits the activity of pro-apoptotic protein (Bax) and stabilizes mitochondrial membrane potential. It is a fluorescence probe that binds to Bax and prevents it from translocating to the mitochondria, inhibiting the release of cytochrome c. Prolonged exposure to Zinquin leads to apoptosis in prostate cancer cells. Zinquin also targets intracellular targets, such as MMP-9, which is involved in cancer metastasis. The compound has been shown to be stable when complexed with plasma proteins and can be measured by titration calorimetry or fluorescence spectroscopy.
