Oxamflatin is a potent inhibitor of the transcriptional co-activator protein, histone methyltransferase (HMT). HMTs are enzymes involved in the modification of histones, which are proteins that package and organize DNA. Oxamflatin inhibits HMT by binding to the active site of the enzyme and prevents it from modifying histones. This inhibition leads to changes in gene expression, which may be beneficial for cancer treatment. Oxamflatin also has matrix effects on cells, inhibiting their growth and proliferation. It is an inhibitor of mitochondrial membrane potential, which leads to increased production of reactive oxygen species and cell death. Oxamflatin has been shown to increase the expression of growth factor-β1, which may be important for wound healing and tissue repair.
