Product Information
The voltage-gated ion channel (VIC) is a type of ion channel that regulates the flow of ions across a cell membrane. These channels are important for normal nerve and muscle function, and for maintaining the balance of electrolytes in the body. The VICs have been shown to be critical to the development of pluripotent stem cells from human embryonic stem cells. VICs are also involved in several neurological disorders, including epilepsy and autism spectrum disorder. To date, there have been eight different VIC genes identified, encoding for α subunits. The α subunit mutation has been correlated with mutations in other genes that encode for proteins involved in messenger RNA splicing and alternative mRNA processing. This is one possible cause of genetic syndromes such as Angelman syndrome and Prader-Willi syndrome.
