Product Information
Alternaria alternata is a fungus that produces two toxins, AAL toxin TE2 and AAL toxin TE4. These toxins are polyketides, which are found in fungal secondary metabolism. The AAL toxins have been shown to be potent inhibitors of protein synthesis in eukaryotic cells. In addition to inhibiting protein synthesis, these toxins also inhibit DNA replication and transcription. The structure of the polyketide chain has been determined by X-ray crystallography. It is composed of eight repeating units that can be classified into three types: type I (three units), type II (two units), and type III (one unit). Type I is the most prevalent component in the toxin chain. This natural product has not been studied extensively but has shown potential as an anticancer drug candidate.
