- Benzenemethanamine, 3-chloro-2-methyl-
(3-Chloro-2-methylphenyl)methanamine is a spirocyclic lactam with high binding affinity for the GABA receptor. It is a racemic mixture of two enantiomers, one of which is a potent and selective antagonist at the GABA receptor. The other enantiomer is an agonist, but it has low affinity for the receptor. The (3-chloro-2-methylphenyl)methanamine compound has been shown to have strong anticonvulsant effects in animal models, but it also has significant behavioural side effects. These side effects are due to its agonistic activity at the benzodiazepine site on the GABA receptor and thus may limit its use as an anticonvulsant drug.
