2-Hydroxy-6-isobutylpyrimidine-4-carboxylic acid (HIBPAC) is an antiviral agent that has been shown to inhibit the replication of HIV and herpes simplex virus type 1. It inhibits the activity of viral reverse transcriptase, which is an enzyme that is necessary for the synthesis of viral DNA. HIBPAC binds to the active site of reverse transcriptase, blocking the conversion of RNA to DNA. HIBPAC also inhibits protein synthesis by inhibiting ribosomal translocation and inhibiting cell growth in culture through apoptosis induction.
