Histone Deacetylase Inhibitor VI, HNHA is a synthetic compound that inhibits histone deacetylases. It has potent antitumor activity and antiangiogenic properties. HNHA blocks the activity of dna methyltransferase and prevents the transfer of acetyl groups to lysine residues on histones, leading to gene silencing and cell death. HNHA also binds to HIV-1 integrase and has been shown to be active against leukemia cells in vitro. The mechanism of action for HNHA is not fully understood but may involve hydrogen bonding or fatty acid binding.
