It can be used in the detection of cancer cells through fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). In this assay, the fluorophore of HO-PEG17-OH is excited by a laser at a certain wavelength and transferred to an acceptor molecule, which is typically another fluorophore. The acceptor molecule then emits light at a different wavelength. This process can be detected using a microscope. The hybridization of HO-PEG17-OH with dna replication enzymes has been shown to inhibit the growth of hydatid cysts in mice.
