Description:

3-Nitro-2-hydroxy-[1,1]-biphenyl-3-carboxylic Acid is an industrial chemical that can be reduced to 3,4-dihydroxy[1,1]biphenyl. It can be used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and as a precursor for nylon. The reduction of 3-nitro-2-hydroxy-[1,1]-biphenyl-3-carboxylic acid is carried out by hydrazine and hydrogen gas in the presence of a catalyst such as palladium on charcoal or platinum oxide. This reaction is usually conducted at room temperature or below and produces a mixture of cis and trans isomers.

The reduction method has been shown to be effective against idiopathic chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) with no side effects reported.
