5-Oxo-1,5-dihydroquinoline-2-carboxylic acid is a resonance-stabilized carboxylic acid. It has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of bacterial growth in a number of studies. In addition, this compound has been shown to inhibit the production of nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2 in rats with arthritis. 5-Oxo-1,5-dihydroquinoline-2-carboxylic acid is not active against fungi or Gram negative bacteria. The most prominent metabolite is 5-(3'-hydroxyphenyl)-1,3,4 oxadiazole (HOP). This metabolite may be responsible for the antibacterial activity of 5-oxoquinoline carboxylic acids.
