5-Nitropyridine-3-carbonitrile is a chemical compound that has been used in the synthesis of other nitropyridines. It is also used as a reagent for the detection of cyano groups, hydrophilic substances, and nucleophiles. 5-Nitropyridine-3-carbonitrile has been shown to be cytotoxic to human erythrocytes. While it is not cytotoxic to animal cells, its toxicity can be increased by adding a cyano group to the molecule. This substance may have some interaction with gastrointestinal cells due to its high lipid solubility.
