3-methyl-2,6-dioxo-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyrimidine-4-carboxylic acid is a protonated amino acid that can be found in the human body. It has been shown to have an acidic ph and is soluble in nonpolar solvents. This amino acid can react with alkylating agents and metal cations. It is also active in the methylene group of the molecule and has been shown to enhance the rate of reactions when exposed to radiation or ultraviolet light. 3-methyl-2,6-dioxo-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyrimidine-4-carboxylic acid has been shown to enhance rates by up to 10 times when it is decarboxylated.
