Amiloride is a potassium-sparing diuretic drug that inhibits the epithelial sodium channel in the apical membrane of the renal tubular cells. This increases the cytosolic calcium concentration, which leads to increased exchange of sodium and potassium ions in the cell. Amiloride has been used for the treatment of eye disorders and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), but has not been shown to be effective against cancer. Studies have shown that amiloride can inhibit axonal growth and tumor formation in mice. Amiloride hydrochloride has also been used as an analytical reagent for measuring cytosolic Ca2+, with an optimum concentration at 1mM.
