2-Bromo-6-iodophenol is a model compound that is used in the study of electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions. It has been shown to be a good substrate for cyclic and hypervalent bromophenols, which are often used as catalysts in organic synthesis. 2-Bromo-6-iodophenol has been shown to undergo substitution reactions with electron-rich olefins and alkynes under mild conditions. This reaction proceeds via coordination of the electron-rich olefin or alkene to the central bromine atom followed by nucleophilic attack by an iodide ion. The regioselectivity of this reaction can be controlled by the addition of reagents such as copper(II) sulfate, which can facilitate substitution at one position over another. This compound also undergoes nucleophilic substitution with pyridine and quinoline, but this reaction does not proceed efficiently under standard conditions due to steric hindrance
