PCB No 2 is an industrial chemical that has been used as a precursor in the production of other chemicals, such as benzoate. It has also been used as a stabilizer for transformer oil and
in the manufacture of fire-resistant materials. PCB No 2 is found in wastewater and soil as it is not readily biodegradable. The acute toxicity of PCB No 2 to aquatic organisms is low. The toxicity of PCB No 2 to plants depends on the plant species and environmental conditions, but generally, PCB No 2 decreases plant growth rates, increases leaf chlorosis and necrosis, and decreases photosynthetic rates. PCB No 2 inhibits enzyme activity by steric interactions with enzymes that are involved in fatty acid metabolism. The inhibition constants for PCB No 2 depend on the specific enzyme being studied and linear models have been developed to predict inhibition constants under different conditions.END>
