N,N-Dimethylbenzene-1,4-diamine hydrochloride is a colorless crystalline compound with a melting point of 202°C. It is used to detect the presence of sulfate and sulfides in wastewater and surface water samples. N,N-Dimethylbenzene-1,4-diamine hydrochloride reacts with sulfuric acid to form a red liquid that can be detected by spectrophotometer at 490 nm. The detection limit for this compound is 1 ppb. This reagent also has been shown to be an effective treatment for industrial wastewater containing ammonium and sodium sulfate. The process involves mixing anhydrous sodium chloride (NaCl) with polyethylene glycol (PEG) to produce N,N-Dimethylbenzene-1,4-diamine hydrochloride in aqueous solution.
