S-Carbamyl-L-cysteine is a cell culture inhibitor that blocks the synthesis of proteins. It has been shown to inhibit phosphatase activity, which is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of phosphate esters, and protein synthesis in bacteria. S-Carbamyl-L-cysteine has also been shown to bind to enzymes involved in the uptake of amino acids, such as the racemase enzyme, and the recombinant proteins. The inhibition of these enzymes prevents protein synthesis in cells.
