4-Chlorocatechol is a hydrogen-bond acceptor that can be used as a model system to study acid formation. It has been shown to have antioxidant properties in the wild-type strain of Escherichia coli and in the redox potentials of enzymes such as catalase, glucose oxidase, and galactose oxidase. The kinetic and light emission properties of 4-chlorocatechol are also being studied for their possible use in determining reaction mechanisms. This compound can also be used to form stable complexes with metal ions such as copper (Cu2+). The optimum pH for this type of reaction is between 7 and 8. Protocatechuic acid is one product that can be formed from 4-chlorocatechol.
