Vinyl Laurate is a glycol ether that is used as a solvent in the production of polyvinyl chloride. Vinyl Laurate has been shown to be toxic and corrosive to cells and tissues, with a low degree of toxicity to mammals. It has also been found to inhibit the activity of enzymes such as amylase, which is important in the digestion of carbohydrates. This compound has been shown to have strong oxidation catalytic properties, which may be due to nitrogen atoms at its surface. The polymerization reaction for Vinyl Laurate is slow and incomplete, but it can be sped up by adding an oxidation catalyst or heat. Vinyl Laurate can be synthesized from caproic acid, water vapor and an enzyme form in a solution that contains no other substrate molecule.
