N,N-Diethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine hydrochloride (DEPE) is a cancer drug that belongs to the class of pharmacological agents called alkylating agents. It is a synthetic compound that can be used as an intermediate in organic synthesis. DEPE is a dipole molecule with two electron-withdrawing groups on the phenyl ring. The physicochemical parameters of this drug have been studied using fluorescence spectroscopy. This molecule has high yield and is stable in acidic conditions, showing no photostability at pH values below 5. DEPE has been shown to inhibit the growth of erythrocytes and platelets by inhibiting DNA synthesis and protein synthesis. It also inhibits erythrocyte aggregation and mitosis of lymphocytes and fibroblasts in vitro. DEPE has been shown to be effective against human leukemia cells in vitro but its effectiveness against other cancers remains unknown.
