N1-Phenylbenzene-1,4-diamine hydrochloride is an amine that has been used as a colorant in textile industry. It has also been used to study the toxicity of various solubilized dyes and colorants. In vitro studies have shown that it can cause methemoglobinemia in humans and animals. N1-Phenylbenzene-1,4-diamine hydrochloride is soluble in water, but not in ethanol or acetone. It is catalytically active with trichloroacetic acid and is readily oxidized by air. This compound is toxic to mammals when given orally or intravenously and may be fatal if ingested by humans.
