Product Information
Styrene is a monomer that is used in the production of polystyrene. It can also be used as a building block for the synthesis of 2-(2-chlorophenoxymethyl)oxirane. This compound is synthesized by reacting styrene with 2-chlorophenol in the presence of a metal cation, such as zinc or aluminum, and a ligand, such as tetrahydrofuran, which initiates the ring-opening polymerization of styrene. The reaction system is bimodal, with one mode being at low temperature and the other at high temperature. The reaction rate depends on the concentration of styrene and ligand and the constant for this reaction system is macrocyclic.
2-(2-Chlorophenoxymethyl)oxirane can be used to make polystyrenes with different properties by changing the conditions for its synthesis. For example, if isopropyl groups are added to it during polymerization
