3-Undecanone is a glyoxalase I inhibitor that is used in the treatment of trypanosomiasis. It inhibits the growth of trypanosomes by inhibiting the conversion of glyoxal to the toxic products, methylglyoxal and 3-deoxyglucosone. 3-Undecanone has been shown to inhibit glyoxalase I activity in animal muscle and human saliva. The inhibitory effect was observed using analytical methods such as enzyme kinetics and electron microscopy. The gene sequence analysis also revealed that it is effective against strains of subtilis, endpoints, and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi. 3-Undecanone is bacteriostatic at high concentrations but can be active against some strains of bacteria at low concentrations.
