Tetrahydrofurfuryl butyrate is an organic compound with the formula CH3COCH2CH=CH2. It is a colorless liquid that smells pleasantly of butter or apple. Tetrahydrofurfuryl butyrate is a precursor to tetrahydrofuran and its derivatives, which are used in polymerization reactions. Tetrahydrofurfuryl butyrate can be converted to butyric acid by heating it with sodium hydroxide. This reaction is useful for deodorizing and removing acidic ph. Tetrahydrofurfuryl butyrate can also be used as an immobilized catalyst to produce furfural, which can then be converted into other derivatives such as acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, or methyl propyl ketone.
