1,2-Dithiolane-4-carboxylic acid (1,2-DT) is a hydrogen fluoride analog that has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus faecalis. It binds to the active site of the cyclase enzyme and inhibits the production of reactive oxygen species. 1,2-DT also has been shown to inhibit the uptake of hydroxyl group by bacteria. The inhibition of this uptake may be due to the competition between 1,2-DT for binding sites with other molecules such as glutathione and asparagusic acid. 1,2-DT is a molecule consisting of two carbonyl groups and four carboxylic acids. The biological properties are unknown due to lack of in vitro assays on biological samples.
