TAR is a dietary supplement that can be used to activate transition metal ions. It is a stable complex with an activation energy of approximately 25 kcal/mol. TAR can be used to prepare a sample for analysis by plasma mass spectrometry. The chloride ion of the sample reacts with the TAR to form a ternary complex, which is then analyzed using high-resolution mass spectrometry. This method has been shown to have high values and constant results when testing for metal ions such as iron, manganese, and zinc. TAR is soluble in methanol and has functional groups that allow it to react with organic acids. These properties make TAR useful as an optical indicator or spectrophotometric reagent for transition metals such as copper, chromium, nickel, cobalt, vanadium, palladium, platinum, gold, and silver.
