3-(2-Oxo-cyclohexyl)-propionic acid is a postulated endogenous agonist of the opioid receptor. It has been shown to bind to the opioid receptor, but it is not clear if it binds with higher affinity than endogenous opioids. 3-(2-Oxo-cyclohexyl)-propionic acid may act as a competitive antagonist at the opioid receptor or as an agonist on other receptors. This compound has been shown to have neuropathic properties, and it has been suggested that this may be due to its ability to bind to the opioid receptor. 3-(2-Oxo-cyclohexyl)-propionic acid can be administered orally, and it has also been proposed that this compound could be used in biomimetic strategies for drug discovery.
