2,4,6-Trimethylbenzoate is a benzoic acid derivative that is used as a precursor to ethyl 2,4,6-trimethylbenzoate. It undergoes hydrolysis in water and has an activation energy of 60.5 kJ/mol. The deuterium isotope effect can be seen by the rate of reaction slowing when the trifluoromethyl group is substituted with a hydrogen atom. This difference in rate is due to the greater electron density on the heavier isotope and its greater ability to stabilize the transition state.
