Methyl 2-phenylbutanoate is an organic compound with the molecular formula CH3C6H5CH2CO2. It is a colorless liquid that has a pleasant, almond-like odor. Methyl 2-phenylbutanoate is used in pharmaceutical preparations as an intermediate and in the production of insecticides. This compound also has antidiabetic properties, which may be due to its ability to increase pancreatic insulin secretion. Methyl 2-phenylbutanoate can be synthesized from phenoxyacetic acid and butyric acid. The synthesis proceeds via a carbonyl group migration to form an amide bond with the enantiomer of methyl 3-phenylpropanoate, followed by hydrolysis of the ester group in the acid group.
