Decanamide is a fatty acid amide that is structurally similar to the detergent sodium decanoate. It has been shown to be an inhibitor of molecules involved in inflammation and autoimmune diseases, such as tissue culture and acyl chain. Decanamide has also been used to study the hydrophobic effect in plant physiology. This compound has been shown to have pharmacological effects on bowel disease, such as inflammatory bowel disease, through its ability to inhibit the activity of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
