3-Fluorobiphenyl is a polychlorinated aromatic hydrocarbon that has been shown to be mutagenic in a variety of animal and bacterial assays. 3-Fluorobiphenyl is metabolized by the enzyme epoxide hydrolase, which converts it to 3-hydroxybiphenyl, an intermediate in the production of polychlorinated biphenyls. Epoxides are also substrates for the enzyme epoxide hydrolase, which catalyzes their conversion to 3-hydroxybiphenyls. 3-Fluorobiphenyl has been shown to produce mutations in hamster cells (V79) and s. typhimurium (TA100). These mutations are said to be due to the ability of this compound to form epoxides that react with DNA bases.
