1,2-Benzenedimethanethiol is a hydrogen bond donor that has an aromatic heterocycle. It is a liquid at room temperature and has viscosity of 1.5 centipoise to 2 millipoise. This chemical is an antimycobacterial agent and has been shown to inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in vitro. 1,2-Benzenedimethanethiol also has polymerization initiator properties, which can be used for coatings on medical devices or as a polymerization initiator for polyurethane coatings. The effective dose for this antimicrobial agent is dependent on the type of infection being treated, but ranges from 0.1 to 5 mg/kg body weight per day. 1,2-Benzenedimethanethiol has shown efficacy against various infectious diseases including tuberculosis (TB), leprosy, AIDS, malaria, and meningitis with co-trimoxazole.
