DL-2-Hydroxypalmitic acid is a fatty acid that is found in the mitochondria of the cell. It is one of the most abundant fatty acids in human plasma and can be used as a biomarker for low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Hydroxyl groups are added to DL-2-Hydroxypalmitic acid to form other types of fatty acids, such as lysophosphatidic acid and phosphatidylcholine. The hydroxyl group also has hemolytic activity, which can be used to identify wild-type strains of bacteria. DL-2-Hydroxypalmitic acid is an intermediate in the synthesis of phosphatidylethanolamine from phosphatidylcholine.
DL-2-Hydroxypalmitic acid has been shown to be an activator of transcription and may play a role in polymerase chain reaction amplification.
